Taylor Dunne and Eric Stewart will be visiting LaborBerlin to teach the workshop LIFT OFF: An Emulsion Lift Workshop.
“Lift Off” is a two part workshop examining material manipulations of 16mm film. The workshop will focus primarily on the emulsion lift and reticulation technique to explore degradation and decay. An emulsion lift is where film is immersed in a hot sodium carbonate solution, this causes the emulsion to reticulate and separate from the films base. Once separated the emulsion can be placed on a variety of separate materials; including another piece of clear film. This technique will combine direct animation with photochemical manipulation; to present a cohesive survey of material investigations to workshop participants.
Emulsion lifted film cannot be projected directly because the film surface is so fragile. The second part of the workshop will focus on making film prints of the manipulated film. Film will be printed to black and white film via a synchronizer, used as a diy contact printer. Additionally prints will be made via direct exposure by placing film directly on unexposed stock.
Taylor Dunne and Eric Stewart are artists currently living in Colorado (USA). They share an affinity for 16mm filmmaking, they use photochemical processes as a means to explore the interconnectedness of time, history and the landscape. They are currently collaborating on a film investigating the history of uranium mining and nuclear weapons testing in the American Southwest.

Das Stattbad Wedding, in dem LaborBerlin seit 2010 seine Arbeitsräume hat, ist von der Bauaufsicht wegen Brandschutzmängeln geschlossen worden. Zum 29.5. wurden die Mietverträge aller Nutzer_innen fristlos gekündigt. Bis Ende Juni haben wir nun Zeit, unsere schweren Maschinen und Geräte auseinanderzubauen und entweder in ein Lager oder in neue Räume umzuziehen.
LaborBerlin e.V. ist ein unkommerzielles, eigenständiges Filmkollektiv, das für alle offen ist, die an selbstorganisierten Initiativen und speziell an analoger Filmpraxis mit einem experimentellen Ansatz und Do It Yourself-Charakter interessiert sind. LaborBerlin ist ein gemeinnütziger Verein, dessen internationale Mitglieder sich aus Autodidakten, Künstlerinnen und Filmemacherinnen zusammensetzen. Während die Digitalisierung des kommerziellen Films immer weiter voranschreitet, erlebt der analoge Film im Feld zwischen Avantgarde-Film, bildender Kunst und Performance- Art in den letzten Jahren ein Comeback. LaborBerlin e.V. fördert den handgemachten Film und trägt damit aktiv zum Erhalt analoger Filmpraxis und -kultur bei. Das Labor ist in
Berlin der einzige Ort, an dem von der Aufnahme über die Entwicklung bis zur Postproduktion mit analogem Film gearbeitet werden kann. Unser Verein organisiert regelmäßig Vorführungen, Ausstellungen und Workshops und macht so die Arbeiten seiner Mitglieder und deren technische Erfahrungen einer breiten Öffentlichkeit zugänglich.
Aus unserer Perspektive wäre es in jedem Fall wünschenswert, das Stattbad als Ort für Arbeitsräume und Ateliers zu erhalten, aber die Chancen stehen schlecht. Um die Arbeit fortzuführen und die Zukunft von LaborBerlin langfristig zu sichern, brauchen wir dringend neue Räume!

We’re looking for:
New long-term working space: starting at 100 sq m, with running water and mains power connection. Ground floor or freight elevator available, heavyweight resistant floors, or dry cellar.
Also possible, (short term) storage room: ca. 60 sq m in Berlin or surroundings with large doors, dry cellar, ground floor or freight elevator. As affordable as possible.
Stattbad Wedding, where LaborBerlin has had its working space since 2010, is being shut down by the city due to the building’s lack of compliance with fire safety regulations. On May 29 all renters’ contracts in the building were cancelled without notice. We have until the end of June to dismantle and move all our heavy machinery and equipment to a new space or into storage.
LaborBerlin e.V. is a nonprofit, independent film collective, open to every individual interested in artist-run initiatives and analogue film practices. It embraces an experimental and D.I.Y. craft approach to film production with a mission to support the use of film outside of the commercial film industry. With this purpose it has set up a lab where, under a non-hierarchical structure, anybody can become a member, use the space to process his or her own film material and participate in the variety of events, workshops and activities that take place year round. LaborBerlin is a membership-based organization composed of filmmakers, artists and self-taught enthusiasts. While the commercial film industry’s reliance on the digital continues to expand, in recent years, analog film has experienced newfound interest and growing support in the fields of visuals arts, performance and avant-garde film. Through its active support of handmade filmmaking, LaborBerlin contributes to the preservation and growth of analog film practice and culture. The lab is the only space in Berlin that allows filmmakers the possibility of controlling the entire analog filmmaking process from shooting and processing to post-production. Our collective also organizes regular screenings, exhibitions, and workshops, with the goal of sharing our members’ works and technical knowledge with the wider public and the diverse local arts communities.
In our view, it would be desirable for Stattbad to remain as a space for artist-run studios but we see that the chances are slim. To continue our work and to secure the long-term future of LaborBerlin we urgently need a new space!

A program of shorts by the artist couple Melissa Dullius and Gustavo Jahn with some new and rare films, some German and Berlin premiers. Distruktur — Dullius and Jahn — claim a space fluctuating somewhere between the big and small cinema. Consequently working with analogue film while shooting and mostly also developing their own material, their films seem to create a kinematic time-space that is distinct from the ordinary even though they often use film settings of daily life.
LaborBerlin is proud to host Lisa Marr and Paolo Davanzo from Echo Park Film Center in Los Angeles. Lisa and Paolo are in Berlin to produce another installment of their city-portrait series “The Sound We See”. They will also be presenting three screenings showcasing previous portraits.
Initially developed as part of Echo Park Film Center’s free youth filmmaking program in Los Angeles, The Sound We See uses analog filmmaking techniques (Super 8 and 16mm) and the “City Symphony” genre practiced in the 1920s by Walter Ruttmann and Dziga Vertov as starting points to explore communal creative process and contemporary environments. Discovering and redefining techniques of past avant-garde urban documentarians, teens, tweens, students, friends, film lovers of any age with little or no prior filmmaking experience will work with 8 / 16mm cameras and black & white stock to create a stunning 24-hour cinematic journey with each hour of the day represented as one minute on film. The films will be developed in eco-friendly soups using coffee, tea, vitamin c powder and washing soda. The Sound We See is an ongoing cinematic conversation on the relevance of handmade film in the 21st century.

Filmesperformance is the title of the series of shows by Distruktur that characterize by the presence of the authors during the moment of projection. This presence can influence and affect the projection in different ways: mainly through the production of sound simultaneously to the film projection – music, text, noise – but also altering the image itself, through the manipulation of the projectors. The idea of something unrepeatable gains here another dimension, as itʼs not only the live act that canʼt not be fully repeated, but the films itself are mainly work-in-progress projects, fuelled by the authorsʼ constant production and therefore concretely changing each time they are exhibited, either through a new cut or through new images and sounds that enter each filmʼs constellation.

A constant flow caused by an electric-maritime stream that crosses bodies, minds and spaces.
DISTRUKTUR Melissa Dullius and Gustavo Jahn are Brazilian artists and filmmakers engaged in analogue film and photography as an expressive artistic medium. They met in Porto Alegre in 1999, and shared their trajectories since then. In the end of 2006 on board a cargo ship crossing the Atlantic they formed DISTRUKTUR.
Their work, mainly in 16mm, stands on the intersection of film, performance and installation art. Filmʼs physicality gives it strength as a material for experimentation, through chemical manipulation, printing and reprinting, in- camera effects or through direct mechanical manipulation of the film material. Distrukturʼs work merges a reflection on the state of the medium with a strong research in narrative/ artistic-cinematic language.
In their films, besides doing camera work, text and editing, they also appear as actors and create the soundtrack.
Currently the are working on their first feature film, in post-production phase. The duo lives and works in Berlin.

Visiting filmmakers and co-programmers of the Balagan Film Series Stefan Grabowski and Mariya Nikiforova will be presenting a program of recent films by Boston-based filmmakers.
As onerous amounts of snow continue to bury the city of Boston and it’s surrounding areas, a nascent film collective is incubating beneath the frozen mantle. The goal, outlined in a meeting this past January, is to facilitate the continued practice of 16mm and Super-8 filmmaking by uniting the community and creating a shared workspace with access to resources that may be otherwise unobtainable.
Thanks in part to the numerous educational institutions which regularly draw in fresh students and established artists alike, Boston has long been a hub for experimental and avant-garde film; Yet these same institutions often leave the community feeling fragmented and precarious, as people leave when they are finished with the schools or when the schools finish with them. Still, as anyone working in the physical medium of film today can attest, there is a certain level of uncertainty that is intrinsically bound to the craft, and one must be tenacious to continue working in a medium constantly threatened with extinction.
The eight films in this program represent a small sampling of recent works by members of Boston’s local community. While each is quite different in approach – whether utilizing a homemade optical printer, direct-animation and photogram techniques, chemical manipulation of the emulsion, or in-camera editing – together they exemplify the enthusiastic resilience and high-degree of talent visible in Boston today.
With films by Kim Arnias, Brittany Gravely, Saul Levine, Xander Marro, Matt McWilliams, Robert Todd and Doug Urbank.

Once again after four successful editions, LaborBerlin presents DIFFRAKTION, its annual showcase of new works on film by its members and friends. This year, DIFFRAKTION is very excited to welcome guest programmer Koyo Yamashita who is presenting a selection of Japanese experimental films made between 1975 and 1980. The program provides a glance into one of the most fruitful periods in independent Japanese cinema. With works rarely screened in Germany, it also serves as a unique opportunity to experience one of Japan’s most unruly and idiosyncratic artistic scenes. Koyo Yashamita is the artistic director of the Image Forum Festival and programmer of Image Forum, one of Tokyo’s best-known independent cinemas. He joins us after taking part in the Jury for the Tiger Awards Competition for Short films at the Rotterdam Film Festival.
This program will be accompanied by our traditional program of new films, Installations and expanded cinema performances by lab members and friends. As always the films range widely in formal and thematic approach yet they all explore the unique and ever expanding qualities of analog film.

LaborBerlin is proud to be a part of the 16. dresdner schmalfilmtage. On Thursday, January 22, we will present the opening program with films and performances by lab members, Clara Bausch, Guillaume Cailleau, Distruktur, Anja Dornieden & Juan David González Monroy, Lucas Maia, Klara Ravat, Iana Stefanova and Sophie Watzlawick.
Along with the film program, Clara Bausch, Anja Dornieden & Juan David González Monroy and Lucas Maia, have created three 16mm installations that will be running for the duration of the festival.
On Friday and Saturday, Anja Dornieden & Juan David González Monroy will also be teaching a 16mm contact printing workshop. The workshop is open to everyone and no previous experience is necessary.
Join us at the festival and partake in another year of celebrating the uniqueness of analog film.

This workshop is for old-stock films, that were made in soviet countries from 50s to late 90s. It includes colour film: Svema (Ukraine), Tasma (Russia) and ORWO (east Germany). The basis for ORWO, Svema and Tasma was the Agfa Wolfen plant, where the first modern colour film, was developed in 1936. After the WW2, the plant was taken over by US forces and important patents and other documents regarding the Agfacolor process were confiscated and handed over to Western competitors, such as Kodak and Ilford. As the plant was located in what was to become the Soviet zone of occupied Germany, the US forces then handed it over to the Soviet military administration, which dismantled large parts of the plant and moved it, with key German staff, to the Soviet Union, where it formed the basis for the Soviet colour film industry.
This is 5 bath process, 25 °C temperature. Which is different from C-41 or E-6.
At first part, you will be introduced to reversal theory, of how it works, and how to get good results. After the lunch we will develop few films of TASMA ЦО-25 (daylight), that are expired at 1988 year.
The process will be presented by Vytautas Juozėnas, a photography master student from Vilnius Academy of Arts.
A good opportunity to get closer to those forgotten films, and learn how to process them.
